A character-centric book – Nothing Like it in the World: The Men that Built the Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869

2019 is the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad which was built by mostly Chinese and Irish immigrants.

This 430 page book is a history of these men who built it. Ambrose has selected a huge cast of characters. The end result is a character – centric book.

I personally find this a difficult book to read. There are just too many characters. As a result the big picture eludes the reader.
