This is an illustrated version of the book by Peter Aughton on the first voyage of James Cook. For readers looking for a readable narration of the first voyage, I would recommend this book. Excerpts of writings from the journals of Cook, the botanist Joseph Banks, the artist Sydney Parkinson and William Monkhouse the ship’s surgeon are used judiciously to convey a vivid sense of adventure when sailing through uncharted waters and observing for the first time the Tahitians, the Maoris and the Aborigines. As far as I know, this is the only book published that focus solely on the first voyage.
