Learned but not for the less-learned – The Muslim Discovery Of Europe

This 350 page book is actually a book published in 1982. The 2001 edition merely has a new preface. That said, it is still a book to turn to if one is interested in reading sources from the Muslims world and first-hand accounts by Muslims of their travels in Europe and their impressions of encounters with Europeans pre 19th century.

Lewis writes very well. He is erudite. His command of sources is impressive. As he has compressed his arguments and left out introductory facts, readers approaching this book from a less learned background will struggle to read this book.

But readers who have a prior knowledge of the encounters between the Muslims and Europeans pre 19th century will appreciate this book.
