Zagreb was the venue of the 2nd leg of the Grand chess tour 2019. Zagreb actually has a strong chess heritage. Zagreb hosted the historical Tournament of Peace. The first one was held in 1965 with reigning World Champion Tigran Petrosian placed third. The second one held in 1970 was won by Bobby Fischer by a full 2 points. Fischer had arrived directly after winning a blitz tournament over a very strong field comprising Tal, Korchnoi, Smyslov, Petrosian, David Bronstein, Samuel Reshevsky etc by a massive 4 and a half points. {see chess base article 11 May 2018 by Jankovic}.
