Tash Aw may be more famous. But Tan Twan Eng’s oeuvre of two books has garnered accolades far beyond all Malaysians authors.
His first book The Gift of Rain was footnoted {p 24} in China’s Civil War by Diana Lary, a seminal book on China’s civil war between the Kuomintang and the communists. The Gift of Rain is a novel about the Japanese occupation of Penang.
His second novel The Garden of Evening Mists has the distinction of being made into a movie. It was premiered on 9 Jan 2020. Tan’s writing style has echos of Kazuo Ishiguro.
