A useful survey – The Rise and Fall of Modern Medicine

This book was written in 2000. As I reread it now due to Covid 19 pandemic, I can’t help but recall the author ‘s premise that medicine achieved great advances from 1940 to 1970s to eradicate many diseases and that the rate of improvement had slowed since then.

Cancer is for example still, mainly, uncurable. Is it due to the vested interest of the pharmaceutical industry, the partisan politics of the advanced countries or disillusioned doctors entering the profession?

This book which I bought in Jaipur surveys the major achievements of the medical profession. Highly recommended.
