Coffee table book – Arts of Diplomacy: Lewis and Clark’s Indian Collection

This beautifully illustrated coffee table book was commissioned in 1997 to celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Voyage of Discovery of May1804 to Sep 1806.

The focus of this book is on the objects given by the Native Americans / Indian chiefs to the expedition. Objects like smoking pipes, painted hides, whaling hats and carrying baskets are used to illustrate the cultural encounters.

This book from the Indians’ perspective is therefore a fresh and original perspective on this famous road trip of American history. A joy to peruse.
