By Barbara Tuchman

Barbara Tuchman is not a familiar name to most readers nowadays. But in the 1960s she was a prolific writer of history book.

Some of her books are still in print. Here are two. The Proud Tower is an atmospheric account of life in Europe and the United States just before world war 1. The Guns of August narrates the outbreak of World War 1 and the events in Aug 1914. For a more recent book on the events that led to world war 1 you should read The Sleepwalkers by Christopher Clark.
