Born in Malaysia: A Photographer’s Journey

Kenny Loh, Tan Joo Lee

This book is a trip to nostalgia. It will appeal, in particular to those who had their childhoods in Malaya circa 1950s to 1970s.

Loh, a photographer by profession, born in Ipoh returned home after two decades abroad. Determined to rediscover his childhood he went around West and East Malaysia to document the stories of the older folks still plying their trades and businesses in the historical parts of old Malaya.

Juxtaposed with these intimate stories, he has reproduced his photos of them and their shops etc. He does not ignore the humble waiter. We can see the photo of Captain Morgan the head waiter and a fixture of Coliseum cafe in KL. {p 64}.

It’s a pity the book has no index. It would have greatly facilitated readers searching for their favourite shops etc.
