This book covers more than its title suggests.
Greenwood begins with his childhood, his journey to India, his experience with the British revenge army with the ominous title Army of Retribution in the revenge invasion of Cabool { new name Kabul}, the subsequent retreat after devastating the Afghan villages, forts and countryside, and his subsequent return to England.
His observations of the natives upon landing in Calcutta, the bazaar, his hunting, barrack life is vivid and interesting.
Highly recommended to give some flavor to The First Afghan War by Lady Sale, edited by Patrick Macrory and the Return of the King by William Dalrymple. Both of which are excellent in their own rights.
