The Retreat from Cabool — Lady Sale: The First Afghan War

This is actually a journal of the disasters in Afghanistan by Lady Sale. Edited by Macrory who has included as an appendix Dr Brydon’s account of his dramatic escape back to Jalalabad.

Lady Sale is the wife of the British commander in Jalalabad. She and several other British officers were captured and taken hostage by Akbar Khan.

Her journal starts from the retreat from Kabul. One week later the entire army and followers of 16,000 were killed except for Dr Brydon.

The journal ends with her rescue by her husband. She writes well. Macrory has provided useful notes to guide the readers.
