Eileen Chang is one of China’s more famous pre-World War II writers based in Shanghai. She fled to Hong Kong after Mao won power.
Her most famous novel is the novella Lust, Caution (1979 published), which was made into a movie by Ang Lee. It is only a 37-page short story which was fleshed out to an erotic tale of espionage and love in Japanese occupied Shanghai of the 1940s.
