An excellent book. Full of personal recollections by the soldiers, airmen and sailors involved in this miracle without losing out on the bigger picture.
Over 11 days the bulk of the BEF was evacuated. Lord shows us the bravery of the BEF soldiers who defended the perimeter defence so that the rest can be evacuated.
A fact not well known is the bravery of the French who provided the rear guard for the last of the BEF to be evacuated. They redeemed their honour for the dismal defence of France.
Hitler’s fatal mistake was to stop the tanks and infantry attack on Dunkirk. Goering convinced him air attack would suffice. The same mistake was repeated in the Battle of Britain.
If you only have time to read one book on Dunkirk, this is the one. A more granular and detailed book is Dunkirk by Hugh Sebag Montefiore.
