Margaret Shennan is justly known as the author of Out in the Midday Sun – The British in Malaya 1880 – 1960.
Born in Kuching, Borneo in 1933, her parents and she left to stay in Butterworth when she was only 6 weeks old. (p 73).
This is an autobiography of her life in Butterworth from 1933 to 1941, at age 8. It is a recollection of childhood events seen through the innocent eyes of a privileged childhood.
Readers will be transported to an idyllic Malaya during the last halcyon days of the Raj.
She tells us of her amah, syce, Boy, Kebun who served her British family.
Nostalgia looks back at the good old days, where life was simpler and peaceful.
