25 years ago, on 30 June 1997, Hong Kong was surrendered back to China by the UK.
This book by an HK professor gives an excellent overview of the history of HK from its takeover by the British to its surrender by Patten.
Revelations in this book are, inter-alia, the uprisings by the Chinese in the New Territories when the UK took the land by the unequal treaty; and the return of more than 1 million Chinese who worked in HK to Canton to boycott the British in one of many periodical boycotts. Many were shot when the British soldiers tried to prevent them from leaving. (Pages 19 to 20).
