Thou Art Understood

Fung Ming-chu

This slim and compact book punched above its weight. I bought it in 2014 from the National Palace Museum of Taipei.

Published by the National Palace Museum, Taipei, in 2005 it explains the origins of tsou-che or Palace Memorials.

Started by Emperor Kang Hsi, expanded by his son Yung Cheng and formalised by his son Chien Lung, these memorials allowed officials from the vast empire to communicate directly with the throne and received a reply in vermilion ink, a rescript.

Thou art Understood- Ching court communication is a gem. There are numerous Memorials shown with English translations.
