This is a wonderfully written book on the relationship between Kang-Hsi and his bondservant Tsao Yin.
The text is interspersed with Memorials between the two, showing care and affection from the Emperor and duty and humility from the servant.
Words can’t describe how wonderful this book.
Spence wrote the essay, which became this book, for his thesis. His essay won the John Addison Porter Prize Yale University, 1965.
