Rereading this over 5 days in May 2020 I am amazed by Lieven’s command of Russian sources. His analysis is cogent. What comes out clearly is his contention that the Russians fought a campaign with cunning and great skill. His contention is supported by skilful use of contemporary sources.
Tsar Alexander 1 in this book shone brightly as a leader though not as a military leader.
Lacking though are maps of the battles. Without these maps it is quite a struggle to follow the cut and thrust of the battles.
This is a book for readers who are keen to know the contributions of the Russians to the defeat of Napoleon. I highly recommend this book.
