The Tiananmen Protests figures – Part 1

Stanley Wolpert

How many died when the military went in to clear protesters who refused to obey a martial law curfew?

A recent book stated 478 dead with 920 wounded .[ ref 1] .

In the fighting caused by the reckless British’s Partition of India, Wolpert says a conservative number who were murdered or expired is 200,000, a more realistic total is one million. [ ref 2].

Yasmin puts it at 500,000 to one million. [ ref 3].

Mountbatten puts the figure at first 100, 000 then 200,000. British commanders on the ground like Ismay put it at nearer 1 million. [ ref 4].

In the May 13, 1969 Tragedy the official death toll is 196.[ ref 5].
