Majie – Part 2

I recall a majie frequently visiting my maternal grandma when I was young in the 1970s.

She would visit, I think, on Sundays. They met on the ship voyage out of Kwangtung to Malaya. They became good friends.

She would come dressed in the majie uniform called the samfu, a black and white outfit consisting of black trousers and a white top.

Her hair would be plaited. She would carry an umbrella made of paper coated with oil to make it water-repellant.

She would always bring a live chicken, wrapped in newspapers with its head protruding out, tucked between her upper arm and her body.

Sadly, I don’t know what happened to her. My able uncle and aunts are no longer around. My mom has poor recollection of the old days.
