Tianjin Cosmopolis – Part 1

Pierre Singaravélou

The Siege of Tianjin was part of a wider assault on foreigners in northern China, including the more famous Siege of the Legations in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion.

Tianjin was the gateway to Peking.

This is a 2025 translation of a 2017 French work on the history of Tianjin in the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion.

The cover shows a city map of Tianjin in 1899.

Surrounded by inner and outer city walls, the map was made by Feng Qi Huang (馮淇滉 / Fung Kee Wong), who was a prominent publisher and cartographer based in Tianjin during the late 19th century. His firm produced maps, guides, and commercial directories.

The map shows Tianjin just before the Boxer Rebellion (1899–1901).

It shows detailed street plans of Tianjin’s walled city, settlements, and the foreign concessions of British, French, Japanese, German, Russian, etc.
