Departure(s)

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Julian Barnes

Departure(s), a fiction based on life, is arguably Julian Barnes’s swan song.

Now age 80, Barnes is again meditating on old age and death.

He has been preoccupied with the end of his life since he wrote The Sense of an Ending in 2001, which won the Man Booker Prize, and his memoir Nothing to Be Frightened Of in 2008, where he meditated on mortality and fear of death.

Departure(s): A Novel is, however, not one of his stronger works. You can give this a miss.
