The Israel Lobby—Part 1

John J. Mearsheimer, Stephen M. Walt

The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy by John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt (2007) posits that this powerful American interest group has created havoc in the Middle East and damaged the interests of Israel as well as the interests of the United States.

The authors narrate that originally, the US support for Israel under the administrations of Truman and Eisenhower was lukewarm.

This is understandable in my view. Both administrations realised that embracing Israel too closely would jeopardise relations with the Arab world and drive them towards the Soviet Union (p. 24 paperback).

It was the Kennedy administration that made the first move to choose Israel over the Arab world.

The main cause for this change of tack in the early 1960s was the growing Soviet aid to Egypt, Syria, and Iraq. Nixon and Kissinger saw Israel as an effective ally to contain the Soviet bear. (P 51)

With the Cold War (a term coined by George Orwell) now over, the US now sees Israel as a useful ally to contain Iran.

The American hawks have always been sore about losing secular Iran to the clerics.

They dream of a regime change. Unable to put boots on the ground, Israel is a reliable ally in this respect.

While the Israel lobby has an outsize role in influencing US policies towards Israel, as argued in this book, this view is not accurate, as ultimately the US has always acted in its own interest.

Countries of the world are paying lip service to the 2-state solution for the Palestine question.

This book is useful in its wealth of information about the special relationship between Israel and the US, but it would be stretching it a bit too far to contend that the Israel lobby is acting against US interests when they advocate strong support for Israel.
