The Land of the Firebird

Suzanne Massie

Pre-revolutionary Russia had produced some of the most inspiring art, literature, dance, and music the world has ever known.

Why has that disappeared? Why is Russia not producing another Chagall, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Diaghilev, or Stravinsky?

“The Land of the Firebird” is a phrase from Igor Stravinsky’s famous ballet and orchestral work, The Firebird, which is based on Russian folklore.

It is also the title of a book, Land of the Firebird: The Beauty of Old Russia, by Suzanne Massie.

This is a book that gives us a sense of the grandeur of old Russia. Highly recommend.
