Penang, Muntri Street and Sun Yat Sen—Part 2

Khoo Salma Nasution

It is a joy to walk the lanes of Penang’s UNESCO area on a Sunday morning. The traffic is less. The crowd has yet to stir to face the hot sun. As they said, “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.”

Muntri Street in Penang is a quaint little street that we explored on 1 June 2025.

It has fine boutique hotels like Muntri Mews, quaint cafes, and a Straits and Chinese ceramic ware museum, as well as shophouses serving as residential units.

In my recent visit, I even saw one shophouse, No. 52 Muntri Street, which has an antique British-era letter box on its wall.

No. 48 Muntri Street was the meeting place for the Penang supporters of Sun Yat Sen.

For a good illustrated book on this indefatigable fighter for China’s independence, I recommend Sun Yat Sen in Penang by Khoo Salma Nasution.
