Sun Yat-sen in Penang

Tjio Kayloe

No. 120 Armenian Street is the site of the Sun Yat-sen Museum.

This is because the shop here was the Nanyang Headquarters of Sun Yat-sen. From this base was planned the Second Guangzhou Uprising, which took place in southern China in the spring of 1911.

The museum is worth a visit. We visited back on 28 Sep 2024.

There are two excellent books on Sun Yat-sen. They are Sun Yat-sen in Penang by Khoo Salma Nasution (2008) and The Unfinished Revolution: Sun Yat-sen and the Struggle for Modern China by Tjio Kayloe (2017).

Khoo is a prolific writer of Penang history. She has contributed much to our knowledge of Penang history. Her research is impeccable. She is a relative of a friend of mine, Eric C.

Tjio is a retired Indonesian banker. His book is, to me, the best biography of Sun Yat-sen. It is readable, concise, and yet has all the essential facts.

The index is excellent, and one can read up on the contributions of Penang to the 1911 revolution.
