The era of Deng Xiao Ping in power from 1977 to 1990 saw a different emphasis in respect to China’s Space Programme.

Deng emphasised that space exploration must be for economic and societal benefits. [p 19].

In this period, 29 satellites were launched for communication, weather, and navigational purposes, some for European countries.

However, still, long-term plans were made in 1986 under Zhao Ziyang under a program called 863 Programme to:

  • Build a space station
  • Develop a heavy launch vehicle, and
  • Develop a space transportation system. [p 30].

On 15 October 2003, China had its first taikonaut, Yang Liwei. [p 195].
