The Gang of Four – Part 1

Alexander C. Cook

This book The Cultural Revolution on Trial, published in 2016, is the most recent book on the trial of The Gang of Four.

The trial was held from late Nov to late Dec 1980, after the moderates ‘seized power’ when Mao died on 9 Sep 1976.

It is a misnomer to call it The Gang of Four Trial as there were 10 accused.

It is also slightly inaccurate to say the moderates seized power as Mao had anointed Hua Guo Feng as his successor.

It was Hua who put the Gang of Four under house arrest.

The role played by Hua has been underplayed by historians in China and overseas.

Without him taking action against the powerful Gang of Four, Deng may not have been rehabilitated as his mentor and patron Zhao En Lai had died earlier in Jan 1976 from cancer, just before Mao.
