This compact book of 295 pages, Caucasus An Introduction by Thomas de Waal, 2nd ed 2019, is a joy to read.
De Waal’s prose is succinct and well-crafted. He writes really well. He managed to convey the essential information on Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan without making it dull for the uninitiated readers.
These three countries all achieved independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. But they are in fact ancient countries and have a rich heritage.
Georgia and Armenia are part of the eastern Orthodox church. Azerbaijan is of Persian Islamic heritage.
