Tunku

Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra prefers the spelling ‘Tunku’ to ‘Tengku.’

He explained so in his own words on p. 11 of this magnificent pictorial tribute to his life titled “Tunku in His Own Words,” published by the NSTP Group in 2009.

The pictures are magnificent and can only come from the archives of the NSTP, which has the largest repository of historical photos of Malaya and Malaysia.

Tunku recalls fondly his time as a student at Penang Free School, where he was not segregated but “was one of the boys, learned with them, played with them, and fought with them.” (P 14).

He lamented that his race has no surname and fears this will result in a loss of sight of one’s ancestry (P 184).
