Gandhi by Ved Mehta

Kai-yu Hsu, Ved Mehta

Gandhi is a many-faceted man. His views change constantly. He explains that he grows from truth to truth.

And yet, he was fastidious in checking and approving the recordings by his followers of his conversations with visitors. He would select the best and correct the statement before sending it for publication in one of his weeklies, like Harijan and Indian Opinion.

He explained, ‘You know how the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John differ. I want only one gospel of my life ‘ (p. 36)

I have read many books on the Mahatma. This book, “Mahatma Gandhi and his Apostles” by Ved Mehta, 1976, is one of the best.

It is not a biography or memoir in the full sense of the word. Instead, it’s an analytical take on the man based on interviews with his followers, combined with acute observations of the places associated with the Great Soul.

For example, we have vivid descriptions of the ashram, the daily routine of Gandhi when he was living there, and excellent quotes of Gandhi as recalled by his followers.
