The Struggle for Modern Tibet

The Struggle for Modern Tibet: The Autobiography of Tashi Tsering (1997) is an unvarnished history of Tibet from 1929 to the 1990s.

Tashi wanted to tell the world that Tibet, in the image projected by the present Dalai Lama, is a figment of the imagination.

There was no free Tibet in the first place. Life was hard for most Tibetans. It was rosy for the ruling elite. He suggests a middle path for the future.

Tashi narrated his story to Melvyn Goldstein, who put it down into book form with the assistance of William Siebenschuh.
