History of Modern Tibet (4 volumes) by Melvin C. Goldstein is considered the most authoritative and balanced history of modern Tibet.
Goldstein uses both Chinese sources and Tibetan oral and written histories.
He does not romanticise old Tibet. Neither is he interested in doing a hatchet job on China.
These 4 books are for serious readers.
