Sir Robert Ho Tung

May Holdsworth

This is an excellent biography. Highly readable based on the personal papers of the man himself.

Ho Tung was a self-made man. His dad was Dutch Jewish, and his mom was Chinese. Abandoned by his dad and not accepted by English society in HK, he grew up fully embracing his Chinese heritage.

His great break was to be trusted by the Keswicks, who were then running Jardine Matheson. He was appointed a comprador for Jardine Matheson. Their relationship went on till his death at the age of 92 in 1952.

He was a great philanthropist. He was a great friend of China and did his part to steer China to modernity.

For his charity work in HK, he was knighted by King George V, and for his work for China, he was honoured by successive Chinese governments.

He is the first Chinese to be allowed to stay at the Peak. Special permission had to be granted as the law then prohibited non-Westerners from staying at the Peak.

I highly recommend this biography.
