A critical analysis of Mao’s achievements – Part 3

Philip Short

The Long March began with many defeats for the Reds. The Troika struggled to come up with a strategic plan for retreat.

In January 1935, in the Zunyi Conference, the Troika was abolished.

This was the turning point in Mao’s ascendancy to power, just as a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step, a proverb from the ancient Chinese text, the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu.

In the Zunyi conference, all the future key figures under the Mao chairmanship participated.

Zhao Enlai, age 37, was demoted to assist Mao. Deng Xiaoping, age 31, was the note taker. Marshal Zhu De, age 49, who commanded the Eighth Route Army, voted to support Mao, age 42. For that reason, etc., Marshal Zhu De was protected by Mao during the Cultural Revolution.
