Scandinavian tour and fairytales

Jackie Wullschlager, Ann Schmiesing

Of the four Scandinavian countries I toured last Sep 2025, arguably the most scenic is Norway with its magnificent fjords. Finland, Denmark, and Sweden pale in comparison.

However, Denmark did produce a famous author of fairy tales called Hans Christian Anderson. His life is told well in a magnificent biography, Hans Christian Anderson: The Life of a Storyteller by Jackie Wullschlager (2000).

The Brothers Grimm, as history calls them, are equally famous for their German fairy tales. Unlike Hans Christian Anderson, who authored the tales himself, the Brothers Grimm basically collected the tales from educated young women, etc, before editing them for inclusion in their famous fairy tale collection.

I recall reading many of their fairy tales in my young years, ages 9 to 12.

A recent book on the two Grimm brothers is The Brothers Grimm: A Biography by Ann Schmiesing (2024).
